Fashion is, of course, often living in the future. That’s why we’re celebrating the Spring/Summer 2024 collections when summer 2023 has only just drawn to a close. However, most of the time, it’s not quite as futuristic as KWK by Kay Kwok’s SS24 show, which was notable for its intergalactic, sci-fi-infused fits that felt entirely out of this world. Specifically, it was inspired by “a fantasy about the digital and physical world,” Kay Kwok told woo ahead of the show. “Imagine there is a portal where you could travel into the digital world or the characters from your favourite digital game could come and meet you in the real world.”

In another pair of hands, this could have felt completely dystopian, but here there’s a sense of optimism and excitement reminiscent of discovering a new digital landscape in a game. Models floated through the bright white space as those in the most ambitious, sculptural looks stood still in the middle of the room like works of art. It was meant to evoke "abundance and the joy of light," according to the show notes. After all, earlier this year, Beyoncé stunned in a custom silver 3D printed art piece from the brand on her Renaissance tour. “I want people to feel excited when they’re wearing my clothes,” Kay says, “like they’re exploring a new thing.”

There is a sense of being thrown into orbit and creating a new self permeating the collection, which combined streetwear sensibilities with vast metallic sculptures, holographic accessories with body skimming gowns. Imagine what you might throw on if you were told you were flying into space tomorrow. Extraterrestrial suits of armour, futuristic rave wear, huge assymetric hoop dresses and planet like detailing added to this otherworldly illusion. Accessories included iridescent handbags and thigh high boots made from socks. The effect is a new type of futurism, one that blends contemporary athleisure with pieces that will only be used in ambitious editorials and daring red carpet looks. But even aliens dress down in hoodies and joggers on their days off.

“The universe always guides me,” says Kay, and this guiding light shines through, reminding us of the fantasy at the heart of fashion, helping us reimagine new futures both for the world and for ourselves. Explore Samira Eugster's dynamic backstage photographs for woo below.
