A guide to Luca Guadagnino’s lush Italian palazzo

The Bones and All and Call Me By Your Name director’s home is as aesthetic as his films

Luca Guadagnino has a knack for creating films we want to disappear inside of (and not just because it means we’d get to sidle up to Timothée Chalamet.) Bones and All, his latest release, might be a violent and, at times, downright revolting story about cannibalism, but it still possesses a dreamy, bewitching quality that makes us want to live in its world. And how can we forget frantically Googling places to stay in Italy after taking in the gorgeous 16th-century villa where Call My Your Name is set?
It’s no surprise, then that the director’s home is just as beautiful. “I hate the concept of beauty for the sake of it,” Guadagnino told The New York Times. Everything in his home is either purposeful or meaningful. The 17th-century palazzo, situated just outside of Milan, had been empty since the countess who previously lived there died more than forty years ago. Guadagnino bought it and began a six-month renovation process which he oversaw everyday. The builders discovered authentic terracotta frescoes beneath the 1950s cement tiles and a 17th-century painted wooden bench in the ceiling’s crawl space.

With grand high ceilings and lots of natural light, the building itself is impressive enough for the interior decor to remain uncomplicated. Rich brown and jewel tones bring added depth while artfully placed plants and flowers bring the outdoors inside. The space might be sparse and, let’s be honest, there’s only so much you can do to turn your houseshare into a vast palazzo, but these curated interiors can help you bring a touch of Guadagnino’s idiosyncratic Italian charm to your space.
From elegant houseplants to fresh floral candles, here’s how to channel the energy of the Bones and All director’s vibey home.
SECRET GARDEN
South Africa Print
£60.00
Perhaps the only downside to Guadagnino’s home is that it doesn’t have a garden. He says the next place he lives will do, but for now he fills his space with wall art depicting flowers and birds. This print from East London printmakers, Blanc Prints, is just what you need to do the same.
SWEET DREAMS
White Bedtime Bundle
£210.00£227.00
This home might be a space of grandeur, but when it comes to high-quality essentials, sometimes you can’t beat simplicity. This white bedtime bundle from Piglet In Bed matches the understated bedding in Guadagnino’s bedroom. All you need for a good night’s sleep.
COMFORT BLANKET
Vita Blanket
£395.00
If Guadagnino is associated with a fruit, it would probably be a peach (because of that Call Me By Your Name Scene.) But the colour of his bedroom was actually inspired by another kind of fruit. “I was eating a date,” he told The New York Times, “a beautiful brown, and I said to the painter, Do this colour. It’s like being in the centre of a huge date.” Add some neutral shades to your own bedroom with Shrimps’s Vita blanket, wool-blended and hand-knitted with flower and bobble embroidery.
HAPPY HANDS
Hand Duo Set
£32.00
The black tiles of Guadagnino’s bathroom are incredibly chic. Complement that colour scheme while cleansing and exfoliating your hands with Pelegrims’ hydrating hand duo. Blending English Ortega Grape Extract and crushed walnut shells, this is how to find luxury in the little things.
TIME TO RELAX
Relaxation Eye Pillow Pale Blue Floral Pattern
£14.00
There’s a calming quality to Guadagnino’s home which this eye pillow can help you reach. The floral fabric matches the flowers that line the surfaces and hallways. Made from quality Pima cotton, the beautifully soft fabric behaves like silk so you can sit back and relax.
