It’s no secret that Black Panther: Wakanda Forever has been one of the most highly anticipated films of the year. And after Chadwick Boseman – best known for his Golden Globe-winning portrayal of King T’Challa in Black Panther – tragically passed away in 2020, fans across the globe have wondered how the sequel to the Marvel blockbuster would take shape without his irreplaceable presence.

But that didn’t stop cinema-goers from showing up to first screenings of the film this weekend. In fact, quite the opposite: the film earned $180 million over the weekend, landing firm as the second highest-grossing cinema debut of the year in the US, falling short only to Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness. Meanwhile over here in the UK and Ireland, the film debuted unsurprisingly at number one, grossing a massive £12.34 million across opening weekend. Needless to say, the film is ranking highly on any film-buff’s must-watch list.

Just three days on from its release, the film has already risen to worldwide critical acclaim: Rotten Tomatoes ranked it a whopping 84% on its tomatometer, while also giving it a generous 95% audience score. Across social media, fans have flocked to TikTok and Twitter to share their post-watch debriefs, while documenting their initial reactions. In what is being described as a love letter to the life of Boseman and King T’Challa, the reactions so far have been epic: they are funny, wholesome, empowering and emotional all at the same time. Check out our round-up of some of the best reactions to the Marvel Universe’s latest cinematic venture:

Fans are in awe of the calibre of acting

With the introduction of new iconic villain Namor (played by Tenoch Huerta Mejía) and the return of fan-favourite roles Shuri (Letitia Wright) and Queen Ramonda (Angela Bassett), viewers are describing these as career-defining performances. Many are already calling for both Wright and Bassett to receive an Oscar for their role reprisals, and hey, we don’t blame them…

People are going crazy for another infamous post-credit scene

If Marvel is known for anything other than its technicolour multiverse of superheroes, it's for their iconic (and often revealing) post-credit scenes. And in the case of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, they did not drop the ball. In a beautiful sentiment to the legacy of King T’Challa, we learn that he and lover Nakia had a son together, Prince T’Challa, who the pair agreed to raise in Haiti (IRL the first black-led republic) away from the Kingdom of Wakanda. Put simply, fans absolutely lost it…

Tissues at the ready

With the film paying tribute to both the late Chadwick Boseman and the death of his character King T’Challa, an emotional response from fans was to be expected. But people are also crying happy tears, overwhelmed by the beautiful sentiments of the film and its commitment to carrying on Boseman’s legacy. From an epic ballad-full soundtrack (for which we also have to thank for the return of RiRi) to intimate portrayals of grief, viewers have been taken aback by the film’s emotional weight…

So if you haven’t already, go see the movie that is already being described as the best addition to the Marvel Phase 4 era...
