Hiya, chronically online scrollers! Welcome back to TikTok Decoder, woo’s weekly breakdown of trends, sounds and creators brought to you by senior writer Darshita Goyal <3 Before diving in, Instagram rarely ever has better drama than TikTok but it’s a special day: shoutout to the influencer who tried to bully someone into buying their username, more here. Onto this week’s slate: sisters who speak a secret language, dads that dance better than you and me, and the social media movement for Palestine. Buckle in!

sound that’s everywhere: Cinderella by Remi Wolf

The pop girlies are so back! First Sabrina Carpenter’s espresso and Chappell Roan’s pink cowboy hat, and now Remi Wolf with her colourful tights and silly tatts. Summer is here and so is vibey, mood music. TikTok loves ‘Cinderella’ and can’t wait for the artist’s sophomore album, The Big Ideas — how cute is that name? If you’re in the UK right now, you can catch Wolf opening for Olivia Rodrigo on her Guts tour too! Just the thought has me “moving my hips from left to right”.

trend you can’t avoid: #blockout2024

On the same evening that celebrities dressed in couture and walked the green carpet at the Met Gala (raising $26m), Israel carpet bombed Rafah, taking the lives of countless families. This along with Hayley Baylee’s tone-deaf “let them eat cake” TikTok and Israel’s success at Eurovision sparked multiple social media movements called #BlockOut2024, #PassTheHat and #OperationOliveBranch. In an attempt to take back power from famous people who haven’t spoken up against the genocide in Palestine, social media users are blocking celebrities. While viral claims that Kim K lost upwards of 3m followers have been found to be false, the movement has taken over social media. On the other hand, creators are raising funds for impacted families in Gaza by offering their analysis or services in return for donations. If you can, please do show your support.
