Stray is a new video game that follows an adorable (and creepily realistic-looking) cat navigating a cyber punk wasteland populated by robots, viruses and plenty of other dystopian figures. But despite the sci-fi premise, the game's main draw is that it takes you into the perspective of the feline protagonist and features plenty of true-to-life miaowing sounds. It's whimsical, fun and very sweet.
Overnight, it's become one of the most-talked about releases we've seen in a long while but not necessarily due to the game's actual content. Rather, the digital footage of a cat prowling around an abandoned city has had a curious impact on IRL cats. Basically, they just can't seem to get enough and it's quickly become a meme.
Gamers have been taking to Twitter to share photos of their pet kittens twinning with the action in Stray or becoming entranced with the plot as it develops on screen. There are snippets of pets placing their paws on the screen, trying to jump the virtual barrier to make contact with the characters in Stray. Some people have even posted videos of cats miaowing at their computer screen, as if they're communicating with their on-screen doppelganger.
Since there are so, so, so many memes and videos of these cat reactions, they've been compiled in the aptly named Twitter account "Cats Watching Stray" which has over 28,000 followers at the time of writing. To be honest, we could spend hours scrolling through all the reactions on that account– which is exactly what we just did, so that we could bring you a list of our fave cat videos and pics that show just how great Stray is.
Btw, if you're a cat-lover who wants more Stray in you and your furry friend's lives, you can cop a cat carrier backpack or cat harness and leash inspired by the game's visuals via Your Cat Backpack. Seriously, too cute.
