Welcome to Wanderlust Wonders: each week we’ll be cleansing your feed with a feel-good snapshot of somewhere beautiful, both in and out of this world.

Today, we’re taking you to Terme di Saturnia, secluded salt water hot springs in Tuscany, Italy

What am I looking at?

In the beautiful old town of Manciano, Tuscany, you can uncover a stunning natural gem. Situated next to an ancient mill house, mesmerising turquoise waters rich with minerals cascade into salt rock pools. The waterfalls are part of a collection of salt water springs in Manciano, known as Terme Di Saturnia. For centuries, a continuous flow of sulphur water oxidising into mini rock pools and waterfalls has produced this incredible blue oasis. And not only are they ancient, but this natural spa has been enjoyed by humans throughout many bygone eras thanks to the mineral-infused water’s supposed healing properties.

Tell me more…

The springs, just one of many dotted around the spa town of Manciano, formed as a result of the now dormant volcano Monte Amiata. Though extinct for thousands of years, the trapped heat beneath the ancient mountain produces a consistent flow of hot water that, when it resurfaces, flows into the hot water springs of Terme Di Saturnia. But the water brings more than just warmth: it also brings a multitude of minerals said to have great health benefits, which has attracted humans to this remote part of Tuscany across the ages. Even the Romans were getting involved – their presence at these springs has been documented as far back as 280 BC (aka a very, very long time ago).

To give it all a bit of intrigue, the rock pools are also laced with legend and myth. It's said that the God Saturn was angry with mankind for constant war and bloodshed, so he struck the earth with a lightning bolt (yes, very Percy Jackson-esque). The event caused sulphurous water to gush from the earth and stream through the valleys of Tuscany, but the water’s mystery and healing properties calmed and unified the people, marking the beginning of a golden age for agriculture and society. I mean, it checks out: a trip to the spa has a similar impact on my state of mind, too...

Ok, but does it actually heal?

Though it might sound far-fetched, science says yes. The water carries minerals with an anti-oxidant effect that is thought to repair skin, so the hot springs are generally considered great for anyone struggling with dry, irritable or broken skin. The waters hold firm at 37.5 degrees (celsius) which, interestingly, is also the exact temperature of the amniotic fluid that protects humans at birth. Like in any spa retreat – think sauna rooms and hot tubs – heat therapy is a go-to treatment for those with muscle aches or joint pain. So with these incredible therapeutic properties – not to mention its calming, scenic views – it’s no surprise that the springs have been named a wellness oasis that everyone should aim to visit in their lifetime. Hey, count us in!
